The possibility of simplifying travel between Türkiye and Spain is being actively discussed in the Turkish media. The discussion follows reports that Spain may be willing to consider visa-free travel for Turkish citizens.

However, no official decision to abolish visas has been made. Turkish citizens must still obtain a Schengen visa to travel to Spain.

Spain has traditionally supported closer cooperation between Türkiye and the European Union. The two countries continue to strengthen their relations in the areas of economy, trade, security, tourism and investment.

Spain cannot independently abolish visa requirements for Turkish citizens because it is part of the Schengen Area. Such a decision must be agreed upon at the European Union level. Türkiye must also fulfil the remaining requirements of the visa liberalisation programme.

Some facilitations are already in effect. Turkish citizens with a positive visa history may gradually qualify for multiple-entry Schengen visas valid from six months to five years.

The discussion indicates mutual interest in closer relations. However, it is still too early to speak of an imminent abolition of visas. The current visa requirements will remain in effect until an official decision is made.
