Bali is planning to build an electric tram line connecting Ngurah Rai International Airport with Canggu, one of the island’s most popular destinations. An agreement to prepare the project has been signed by the Bali provincial government, the Badung Regency administration and Indonesia’s state railway operator.

The route will pass through the airport, Kuta, Legian, Seminyak and Canggu. The line will be approximately 13 km long. According to preliminary estimates, the journey between the airport and Canggu will take around 30 minutes, with trams running at intervals of approximately 10 minutes.

The route is expected to use compact battery-powered electric trams. No overhead power lines will be required, helping to reduce the visual impact of the transport infrastructure, lower noise levels and preserve the architectural character of the tourist areas.

The project is designed to serve up to 60,000 passengers per day. Currently, approximately 150,000 people and 80,000 vehicles travel between the airport and Canggu every day. The new line is therefore being considered as one of the measures to reduce traffic congestion in southern Bali.

Construction is provisionally scheduled to begin in March 2027 and will be carried out in stages. The first section, approximately 6.6 km long, will connect the airport with Legian and is expected to begin operating by the end of 2028. During the next stage, the line will be extended through Seminyak to Canggu. The completion date for the entire route has not yet been confirmed.

The development of public transport is particularly important for southern Bali, where growing tourist numbers and active construction continue to increase pressure on the road network. The new line should provide faster access from the airport to the island’s popular resort areas and reduce dependence on private vehicles.

The project could also become an important infrastructure factor for the property market. Improved transport accessibility may support demand for real estate in Kuta, Legian, Seminyak and Canggu, while also encouraging development along the future route. However, its effect on individual property values will depend on location, project quality, construction progress and the actual launch schedule.
