Dubai’s Al Maktoum International Airport is set to develop the world’s largest automated railway system for transporting passengers between terminals.
The driverless transport network will extend for approximately 50 km and include nine stations, enabling passengers to move quickly across the vast airport complex. The new system will serve as the airport’s internal transport network and is separate from the planned railway connection between DXB and DWC airports.
The contract for the project has been awarded by Dubai Aviation City Corporation. Construction will be carried out by Japan’s Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, its Dubai-based subsidiary and international engineering and construction company Larsen & Toubro.
The railway network is scheduled for completion in December 2031. It is expected to begin operating in time for the opening of the first phase of the redeveloped Al Maktoum Airport, planned for 2032.
The internal transport system forms part of the airport’s large-scale expansion. Once all phases are completed, Al Maktoum Airport will be able to handle up to 260 million passengers annually. The project also includes five parallel runways and approximately 400 aircraft gates.
The automated railway network will reduce travel time between terminals, improve comfort for transit passengers and support the efficient operation of one of the world’s largest aviation hubs. The airport’s development is also expected to support further growth in Dubai South and enhance the transport connectivity and investment appeal of nearby real estate.
