Georgia has officially launched a major expansion project for Shota Rustaveli Tbilisi International Airport. Once completed, the airport’s annual passenger capacity will nearly double, increasing from 5.4 million to 10 million passengers, allowing it to accommodate significantly more international flights and travelers.
The total investment in the project exceeds US$150 million. Construction is scheduled to take place between 2026 and 2028 and includes the expansion of the passenger terminal, modernization of airfield infrastructure, upgrades to technological systems, and improvements to passenger services in line with international standards.
According to the Georgian authorities, the expansion is driven by the steady growth in passenger traffic and the increasing number of international flights. During the first quarter of 2026, Tbilisi International Airport served more than 1.09 million passengers, approximately 8% more than during the same period last year.
The expansion of Georgia’s largest airport marks an important step in the country’s transport infrastructure development. The project is expected to strengthen Georgia’s tourism sector, improve international connectivity, and support further economic growth and investment.
